What are Sustainable Development Goals?
The Sustainable Development Goals are seventeen goals created to fulfill on the following areas:
- End extreme poverty
- Fight inequality & injustice
- Shift climate change
We think that when we hear about the above areas, it would never happen to us. In fact it does. As a professional, serving as media, advocacy and consultancy on an international level, I too with others, have become so immersed with life’s activities, that the above areas go in one ear and out of the other; giving way to intense focus with personal and professional work that has to be done daily.
What does “extreme poverty” have to do with us?
As human beings, we often feel great when we are contributing to others financially or in another capacity, because we are giving of ourselves. We never think we will experience poverty. If you are middle class or upper middle class, you may experience a financial downpour at any time due to life circumstances. So what are we able to do right now in our own homes you ask? Well while we may enjoy the small or large luxuries that we most definitely have the right to enjoy – one may ask, do we need all that we are purchasing. What have we bought that we have not worn or ever used? If more than 50% of our purchases are unused, we are over-purchasing, where the money would be better served elsewhere.
What does “fighting equality and injustice” have to do with us?
I ask you what doesn’t it have to do with us. If you have a mother, father, sister, brother, female or male colleague who is employed or self-employed, friend or foe of any gender who is not receiving the same payment for the work being provided, that is inequality. This may even be you working for a company or as an entrepreneur, where you are not receiving appropriate pay for services rendered.
This is a big question – What does “shift climate change” have to do with us?
This is not something out there affecting someone else. Its affecting all of us. How we eat, where we place our garbage, the aerosol cans we use for hair, etc. The list goes on. Look at ways within your home or office you can be more “green” centered – perhaps turning out the lights when not in use.
